Delverium NPC Roles: Forager, Blacksmith, Agronomist and Merchant
The dated Early Access discussions distinguish Forager, Blacksmith, farmer/Agronomist and the general Merchant, rather than treating every trader as the Merchant role. The Merchant's discovery gift unlocks pontoons; the farming reference identifies the Agronomist as a seed/animal source. Compare each NPC's actual dialogue and stock with the task you need.

Choose a role for the current problem
| Role | Supported use in the sources | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Forager | The starting advice NPC identified in the beginner reference and player roster discussion. | Talk to the nearby starter rather than calling that NPC the general Merchant. |
| Blacksmith | A distinct gear-related trader identified by players and developer recovery replies. | Inspect current stock and dialogue; availability can depend on progression/build. |
| Agronomist / farmer | The farming reference lists seeds and animals from this NPC. | Check the stock for the crop or pen supply you need. |
| Merchant | The developer names this role's discovery gift as the Pontoon recipe source. | Find the role and collect the discovery gift dialogue. |
Identify the villager rather than the generic shop label
- Compare your existing villagers and talk to each one.
- Read the role/dialogue and inspect the actual stock. The linked player discussion notes that different traders sell different things and are named in bed assignment.
- If you only have the three commonly reported starting roles, use the fourth-villager search before building houses for invented extra NPCs.
- Use a valid room and the offered assignment route for the NPC you actually found.
Separate discovery rewards from shopping
Collecting Hardwood or buying unrelated supplies does not replace the Merchant's Pontoon discovery gift. Likewise, owning seeds or an animal does not make its field or pen valid. Follow the pontoon unlock, crop steps or pen checklist for those separate requirements.
What these roles do not establish
The sources do not provide a complete current shop-price database or automatic NPC farm/mining labour system. The latest roadmap places further NPC behaviour and quests in future work. A recruited trader disappearing is a different problem: use the reassignment recovery guide rather than searching for a replacement role.
Check prices and stock before a shopping trip
The trading and coins guide explains Copper, Silver and Gold conversion and separates buying, selling and discovery gifts. Inspect the role and offered item in your own world before spending a whole trip looking for a universal shop inventory.
Player reports of missing higher-tier gear do not establish a shared Silver-equipment cap or a fixed stock-unlock quest for every trader. Check the relevant crafting station and recipe when the shop does not offer the item you need.
