Delverium World Options: Difficulty, Size and Horde Mode

Difficulty, world size and Horde Mode are separate creation choices. The September 30 developer reply says world size has no dedicated enemy-spawn or aggro rule. Choose size for exploration scale; use difficulty, Horde settings, location and current lighting rules to address hostile encounters.

Set each option for its own purpose

OptionChoices in the referenceDecision
DifficultyCasual / Normal / HardChoose the intended encounter challenge.
SizeSmall / Medium / LargeChoose the world scale you want to explore.
Horde ModeA separate creation optionChoose whether you want the described increase in night and underground enemies.

For a first world

  1. Read the difficulty and Horde fields before creating the world. Use Casual if you want the lower named difficulty, without assuming it is completely peaceful.
  2. Choose map size for exploration scale. No reliable comparison here establishes different biome availability or a performance guarantee for each size.
  3. Choose the character's death penalty separately.
  4. For a calmer base, use the Plains and the current torch suppression guide rather than assuming map size provides protection.

Keep Horde numbers and aggro separate

Official v0.1.0.2 removed the Horde enemy-aggro-range modifier. That does not say Horde stopped increasing enemy numbers. v0.1.0.3 also made separate spawn and aggro changes. Compare dated advice with your build before treating an older encounter report as a current setting description.

If you already created the world

The reference establishes creation options, not an in-game toggle for every existing-world setting. The community world-copy editor guide is an unofficial inspection/editing route and has not been tested here through an in-game restore. Keep a backup and distinguish the setting you want before changing a file.

If the issue is simply repeated base attacks, changing lighting and the settlement location is a different, documented branch. If the issue is progression, use the lore-marker route rather than restarting solely because another player preferred a different size.

Does a larger world reduce enemy aggro?

A September 30 developer reply says there is no dedicated world-size rule changing enemy spawning or aggro. A player's Medium-versus-Large comparison is an observation, not proof that increasing size protects a settlement. Choose size for how much world you want to explore; address attacks through difficulty, Horde settings, base location and the current torch-suppression rules.

If your current world feels unusually hostile, compare its build and options with the lighting guide before abandoning the save. The developer's answer separates a reported experience from a size-based mechanic.
