Which Axe Cuts Hardwood and Deadwood in Delverium?

The community Tools table lists Wood, Stone and Copper axes for Softwood, Iron Axe for Hardwood, and Silver Axe plus several later axes for Deadwood. If your early axe works on ordinary trees but not the tougher wood, resource tier is the first check.

The table's resource tier is different from attack damage. A weapon with a large enemy-damage number is not evidence that it can replace the correct axe for a tree.

Plan a documented Deadwood-capable upgrade

  1. Use an Iron Axe's listed Hardwood tier to build a Hardwood supply.
  2. Gather Silver Ore and make Silver Bars at a Furnace.
  3. The Hardwood reference lists Silver Axe = 4 Hardwood + 4 Silver Bars at an Iron Anvil.
  4. Craft it near the named anvil, select it and try the intended tougher tree.
  5. Check the collected material name so you know whether you obtained Hardwood or Deadwood.

Reserve wood for the next recipe

Hardwood is used for the Fishing Rod, later tools and settlement pieces. The Fishing Rod recipe uses 2 Hardwood, 2 Iron Bars and 8 Twine at a Hardwood Workbench. Deadwood is used for later tools: the reference lists Gold tools at 4 Deadwood + 4 Gold Bars, with an Obsidian Anvil.

Those recipes show why the upgrade matters, but do not establish universal tree coordinates. If you are searching the wrong terrain, a better axe alone will not place a Deadwood tree beside the base.

If the upgrade is missing

Check the actual recipe, station and available ingredients. Use the station-family table to distinguish Iron Anvil from an early anvil. If the tree still resists a supported axe, record the tree/material identity and build rather than assuming the axe's combat statistic governs resource access.
