Delverium Cannot Place Animals? The 256 Tame-Animal Limit

The developer documents a maximum of 256 tame animals, including player-placed livestock, butterflies, worms and other critters. This can explain rejection in an otherwise valid pen. Check enclosure validity, a clear placement tile and your total placed animals separately; a pale red X alone does not prove the cap is the cause.

The limit counts more than livestock

In the September 30 developer reply, the current maximum is 256 tame animals. The count includes player-placed livestock and critters such as butterflies and worms. Counting only chickens, sheep and cows can therefore miss much of the total.

This is a total tame-animal limit, not a documented allowance of 256 animals per pen. Making another enclosure is not evidence that this separate limit has increased. The developer describes it as a performance limit and says the value is exposed in data for future modding; that is not a shipped settings slider or a tested modding procedure.

Separate a crowded pen from the total cap

  1. Check your fence, trough and enclosure setup. A structurally invalid pen is a separate reason to investigate placement.
  2. Try one animal on a clear interior tile in an enclosure that previously accepted animals. Note the placement marker and whether every animal type is rejected.
  3. Review all the animals and small critters you have placed, including decorative butterflies and worms outside the livestock area.
  4. If many enclosures stopped accepting animals together, investigate the total limit before building still more pens.

The original player reported a pale red X, no explanatory message, and rejection even for butterflies after checking pen validity. The developer answered with the cap. That makes the limit a concrete diagnostic possibility; a red X alone does not prove your save contains exactly 256 animals.

If removing livestock did not help

The same player had already slaughtered some animals before asking. The thread does not verify a reliable counter-reset method or guarantee that killing a few livestock fixes every placement failure. Keep your save and avoid repeatedly slaughtering valuable animals on that assumption.

Record the build, affected pens, animal types, approximate livestock and critter totals, and what you removed. Capture the red X and a valid enclosure. Those details let a bug report distinguish an overlooked critter count from a placement or save-state problem.

Can you increase the limit?

An October 3 follow-up asks whether it can be changed, but the inspected thread has no instructions answering that question. Do not edit an unknown save field or use an invented console command. The mod-support overview separates current community tools from planned official support.

For a small new farm, follow the capture and placement route instead. Pen capacity and the five-animal achievement are separate tasks; the developer's total cap does not supply a tiles-per-animal formula.
